Making the rightmove in the UKs startup industry

Startups are a passion of mine, seeking out new opportunities and looking to grow small companies from minimum investment. The UKs startup scene has been somewhat lacking in terms of innovation but this is not due to the inventors themselves, but because of the societal attitude that we lack, as compared to the United States.

Great Britain has always been renowned for having some of the greatest inventors, innovators and masterminds. Being such a small nation it has done exceedingly well, however and I am sure some of my fellow British citizens will concur, we're lagging behind when it comes to technological innovation and the support of such entrepreneurs. It has unfortunately in the last recent months declined moreso, if anyone has noticed the website for innovation and business within the United Kingdom has become quite vague and not really very helpful, although this could just be my opinion. There has also been confirmation for the scrapping of Business Link (a resource to help UK businesses), that move in itself shows our current governments attitude, which is a massive downer. Probably an entirely different topic to be discussed and ofcourse highly opinionated.

I feel I am extremely extremely fortunate to have studied Entrepreneurship & Management at Kingston University as it has been one of the most exciting courses I have undertaken, I was previously a Civil Engineering student, which I found slightly boring, although I was doing quite well at it, I had a keener eye on Business thanks to one of the Business modules within Civil Engineering, the lecturers name slips my mind, however I am grateful for his wisdom. This led me to rethink my degree and I actually transfered over to Entrepreneurship & Management and with many thanks to Jonathan Gander whom saw my potential and believed I would be perfect for undertaking said degree.

Moving forward from that and having more relevance to the title, we have a huge problem within the United Kingdom, we do not have our silicon valley, we do not have the support, the enthusiasm, the culture, the entrepreneurial atmosphere that is required to create great technology startups. There is a huge difference in the culture towards technology start ups between the UK and the USA, generally it is much more difficult to approach venture capitalists in the UK, angel investors etc as risk and failure is seen in a completely different light between these two countries, in the UK, have one failure and suddenly you have a postit note on your back reading failure, whilst in the USA it's seen in a different light, you've gained some wisdom, strength, understanding, and failures occurs, you must go through some failures to learn and create a better product.

Lacking this enthusiastic culture and upbeat mentality towards technology start ups has even made myself rethink my own startups strategy and though I feel like a bit of a sellout/unpatriotic for saying this, we're looking at a US launch, having said that, a guilty feeling has struck me, but these are just one of the decisions you have to make. My idea for this company started many years ago and it has evolved over time as I mentioned in a previous blog post, but the problem I have had is there is not that community of support here in the UK, that enthusiasm, so therefore I turned to the internet to find like minded people, Jason Calacanis and Kevin Rose, I've followed a lot of the work that they have been doing and rather than just seeing what work they have done, they have portrayed a more inspirational message through there demeanour and attitude. Jason hosts a great show as does Kevin, well a number of shows, and they have been a great inspiration for me to listen to their advise, enthusiasm and knowledge which has more recently pushed me to start working harder on my ideas and move from the creative to becoming innovative and taking things to production and building up on these ideas which can benefit society. I would highly recommend that any person that is really interested in innovation and looking into developing their ideas start looking at these kinds of characters and follow the tech blogs! (rather than watching "The social network", which I refuse to watch (edit, ok I eventually watched, the shame) and see what they have done and apply the same enthusiasm and ethic to your developments, it sure has helped me and I hope that the UK will see more innovators as we require innovation to grow our economy and it is great people who can innovate which will help build the economic future of our countries.
